Licence agreement.

The GPL, a key, and the difference between them.

Draft, not yet reviewed. This is the design reference for the page, written from how the product actually behaves. Every clause below needs a lawyer before it is published as a term of sale, and nothing here has been checked against Indian, EU or US consumer law.
In one sentence

The code is GPL, so you may use and modify it freely. The key is a subscription to us — updates and support — not permission to run software you already installed.

The code is GPL

Kavita is licensed under the GNU General Public License version 2 or later. You may use, modify and redistribute it under those terms, on as many sites as you like. Nothing on this page reduces that.

So what is the key for?

Updates and support. The key is a subscription to us, not permission to run the software. This is how nearly every commercial WordPress plugin works, and it is worth stating plainly rather than leaving people to discover it.

Domains

Your plan allows a number of domains: one on Free and Solo, five on Team, unlimited on Practice. Extra domains can be added to Solo and Team. Staging and local development copies do not count against it.

What the key check does

Asks our licence server whether the key is valid, and receives a signed reply. It carries the key, the domain and the plugin version. It never carries booking, customer or revenue data.

If our licence server is unreachable, the plugin keeps working. A server we forget to renew must never be able to take your booking form down.

Bundled third-party code

intl-tel-input ships with the plugin under its own licence, and the .pot tooling is ours. A full list of bundled components and their licences is in the plugin folder.

Transfers

A key can be moved between domains you control, from the account area. Selling or sharing a key is the one thing that ends it.
